Legacy of a prodigious thespian

Dr Henry Jayasena is no stranger to these pages of Artscope. He penned the ‘Henry Jayasena Column’ when R S Karunaratne was editor of this supplement. He made his mark in local culture scene with his gifted flair on stage as a playwright, director as well as a performer. Born on July 6, Henry would have been 81 if he did not pass away in 2009. Two posthumous works of Jayasena: ‘Lazarus’ a translation by Vijitha Fernando (Foreword by Dr Lakshmi de Silva) and ‘Sudu Seeyage Kavi Sindu’, a collection of children’s poetry, were recently launched by his son Sudaraka Jayasena. Sudaraka recalled life and times of his father for ‘Encounter of the Week’.
* Dr Lakshmi de Silva on ‘Lazarus’
It is lively in its vivid realistic rendering of time and place. The portrayal of a childhood of isolation and loss is terse, yet moving, while the delineation of sexual stirrings and relationships is not only frank and mature but has unusual perceptiveness, touching sometimes on the sad borderline between ludicrousness and loneliness with compassion and sensitivity, at others on sensuous vitality. Henry Jayasena has been unusually fortunate, where, all too often, a translator’s wry consolation is the reflection that half a loaf is better than nothing, Vijitha Fernando gives full value. The skill that won her the State Literary Award for Women Writing.
Dr Henry Jayasena
Q: You had the privilege to share father’s celebrity status since early childhood. You were the child in ‘Hunuwataye Kathava’. Any special reasons for you to be chosen?
I do not think father gave it serious thought. I was only five. Unlike adult characters, the child characters have to change on stage over a few years. I was chosen to perform as the small child, I think, because he could not find anyone else.
I was the fifth actor. That was no big deal, as there were no dialogues involved. I was too small to understand anything he must have taught me.
Q: How was his influence on your adult life?
In the 1960s father did a lot of stage plays. They had a warm response. So he decided to stage his ‘Janelaya’, which was already staged a few years, once again. I took part in the play. I could learn a lot of things then. It’s interesting to see how he teaches certain things. He taught some lessons non-verbally.
There is a particular way of standing on stage. You have to learn how to say or pronounce certain things too. If you are a director, you must learn how to manage the cast. I used to observe my father handling all this with interest. I was in my twenties then.
Q: What’s his source of theatrical knowledge?
Unlike today, there had been no teachers at the time. When he was quite small, he had seen a play with Rukmani Devi in Negombo. The play was produced by Minerva group. The little child he was, he didn’t even know it’s a stage play. Some were singing, some dancing – all that had enthralled the little artiste in him.
He was 12 years, when this happened.
Dr Henry Jayasena hands over a copy of ‘Play is the Thing’, a collection of columns which appeared in Artscope, to his son Sudaraka Jayasena and grandsons. Dr Lakshmi de Silva looks on. Picture by Palitha Gunasena
He sent a letter to the Minerva group without the knowledge of his elders. He knew Minerva was based in Negombo. But he had no cash for a stamp. That way he came a long way. He had a long tough journey. There were people to appreciate his skills, luckily.
Q: Your father’s starting point was stage. He gradually entered cinema and television. Towards later stages, he started writing in English in addition to Sinhala. Which interested him most?
Stage, of course. Even when he had quit stage, he did not stop going to watch stage plays. Whenever there is a good play, he would want me to join him too.
Q: But why did he quit the stage?
That’s because he had more commitments in cinema and television.
Q: He was Deputy Director General of Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation in its infant stages. It must have been a challenge for him.
Definitely it must have been a challenge. Luckily he had experience of visual medium behind him. He had already taken part on stage and in cinema. He had been on foreign trips too.
He pioneered in introducing Oshin to Rupavahini, because he had watched the teledrama in Japan. So Rupavahini bought the copyrights to show it in Sri Lanka. As everyone knows, it became quite popular. The Japanese representatives were impressed by the ratings, and they sent the second instalment free of charge.
Teledramas like ‘Paligu Menike’ were also telecast during his period.
Q: Had he ever persuaded you to follow his footsteps?
He had never done that. True, he took me to act. But he never asked me to follow arts. If you have to follow something, you got to have intuition for that. I feel my father didn’t see that intuition in me. So he didn’t persuade me to take up arts.
He never forced me into anything. He always advised me to become a good citizen. He also emphasized the need of a secure job. That must have persuaded me to take up a job at the Hatton National Bank. I got that offer following my ‘Golu Hadawatha’ performance. I performed the lead role and it won me fame.
Q: Like most artistes, you father too did not depend only on artiste’s income. He was a government employee. How did he manage to engage in various art activities amid government employment regulations?
The environment. As he gradually became popular or established in the field, his senior officials understood his worth. They too admired him.
They made things easier as much as possible for him. At the Highway Department, he was posted in record room. He had liberty to entertain his visitors. He had liberty to go on with his work. Later in life he received positions linked to his field of interest.

Q: He dedicated most of his later stages in life for writing books.
I think he was a writer anyway. He had been already in the industry, as almost every play was scripted into a book. But true, he was more interested in writing books following theatre and teledrama. He penned many original works. They were mostly self-portrayals, as his health was failing.

Q: Your father was inclined to Buddhism during the period when his health was failing.
It was not a sudden transformation. He already had some command of Pali, and had deciphered some obscure Pali stanzas for me and my children. He was not a fanatic, but occasionally would suggest going to temple.
He led a religious life, I knew. But the sickness came as a shock, and he was a little down. His religious life helped him a lot.
Q: Your mother was also into arts. How did you see your parents’ relationship as artistes?
Father did not take any decision without consulting mother first. They both had the habit of consulting each other before taking any decision. Not that they did not have any issues.
They had conflicts, but my parents were skilled enough to negotiate those conflicts.
Q: How was your father’s attitude towards young generation’s plays?
Wherever something deserves appreciation, father didn’t hesitate to do so. He watched most stage plays of young dramatists and used to go offstage and congratulate them. He pointed out the plus as well as minus points. He was happy with most young dramatists’ plays.
Q: Your father used English as his medium of expression mostly during his last years. He wrote originals in Sinhala and translated them into English too. Why did he choose ‘Lazarus’ to be an exception?
At first he wanted to translate his Sinhala book. But later he wanted either Vijitha Fernando or Dr Lakshmi de Silva to translate it. They were the translators he had faith in among English translators. Vijitha Fernando completed the project in one month, and father liked it very much. All this happened when father was on his last lap. Then he passed away, and the manuscript lay somewhere. I had completely forgotten it, until Dr de Silva rang me one day and reminded. It’s my fault, as I was occupied with other commitments. When I asked Sarasavi publishers to undertake the publication, they also reminded of another book by father called ‘Sudu Seeyage Kavi Sindu’. It was even printed, but had not come out of press. So we launched both books.

Tribute to the maestro

‘Gandharvaabhinandana 2012’ , a classical musical event featuring Amarasiri Peiris, one of the most prominent maestros in local classical music will unfold for the second time on July 20, 6pm onwards at Nawaragahala, Royal College. The show is organized for the second time by Direct Intake of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry students of University of Colombo in hands with ChemSoc and Department of Chemistry (University of Colombo).
Amarasiri Peiris
“The first show was staged in March 2010 with Sunil Edirisinghe one of the most popular singers of Sri Lankan classical music. This is an annual event of the university. Our objective is to appreciate someone who has done a valuable service to our culture. Even though there are musical awards there is no platform that appreciate great personalities,” said Vajira Weerasekara, lecturer, Molecular Biology.
“This is not a musical show which merely entertains people. We will be inviting the lyricist, music director and have a discussion on the song and its theme. Professsor Sarath Wijesooriya will be the compeer of the evening. This will help the audience to appreciate the song. We want to inculcate this value in our university students,” he added.
While appreciating Amarasiri Peiris who has made a vast contribution to the field of music, the event will be a fundraiser to upgrade the Biotechnology Laboratory of Department of Chemistry, University of Colombo to meet the modern state-of-art facilities for Life Science research.w
“More than 100 research students including both undergraduates and graduates would benefit each year through this project. We believe that it is our responsibility to stabilize the institute. Thus we create molecular biology products such as Recombinant proteins, Enzymes, DNA extraction kit, RNA extraction kits which we sell to hospitals and other universities,” Weerasekara said.
Commenting on why science students are involved in organizing a musical event, Weerasekara says a scientist is a person who can appreciate arts and literature. “You can not separate arts and science. Even science students should learn to appreciate literary works,” he added.
Meanwhile, the veteran singer feels fortunate to participate at this event. “Most of my life I have been a violinist although I had the talent for singing. When the opportunity came my way to sing I grasped it eagerly as I love singing. There onwards I have made a lot of contributions to this field. I was a playback singer for many films and teledramas and have won several awards. However I feel my work is not adequately appreciated. Media does not talk of my works in an appreciative manner. Amidst such a situation I feel privileged to be invited to sing at a mega musical event of this nature. It is a great opportunity and am looking forward for it. I will present few songs from my latest album Ganga Gala Yaden to the audience,” he said.
Chief Organiser of the event, Gayan Parakrama thanked Dr. N. V. Chandrasekharan, Professor K. R. R. Mahanama and all the students for their tremendous support rendered to him in organising the event.
“Nalaka Anjana Kumara and the crew will provide music for the evening. This is bound to be a unique experience for the audience,” he said.
Daily News is the official media partner of the event. Tickets can be obtained at Sarasavi Bookshop (Nugegoda and Dehiwala), Sadeepa Bookshop Borella, Godage Book Emporium Maradana and Salaka Senkada.

Haththa: Painting the drama of the street

Prof. Gamini
Hattotuwegama

He is recognised as the father of modern street theatre in Sri Lanka. His students have moved from the street to the stage, from stage to television and some even to the silver screen. They owe much to Gamini Haththotuwegama, who, even after many decades of political theatre, does not seem to have moved at all. In his mid sixties now, the man remains in the street, metaphorically and literally.

He was maybe a couple of years senior to my parents at the Peradeniya University, and they called him “GK”. Some refer to him as “Hatha”, some as “Gamini” and others like myself, “Haththa”. My first recollection of this effervescent man goes back to at least thirty years. I had heard my grandmother complaining that “GK hadn’t returned some books he had borrowed”. They belonged to my late grandfather, who died before I was born.

So, a couple of years later, when he happened to visit us, I asked him, quite rudely actually, “where are seeya’s books?” He laughed quite heartily.

I can’t remember if I thought it was funny, even though I have known people to laugh with Haththa, not so much for the content of his jokes but his laugh itself.

It would have been about fifteen years later that I really got to know him.

I was in my second year at Peradeniya. This was just before the bheeshanaya was forced down our throats, although the signs of the impending tragedy were there for everyone to see. My friends, a group of around 25 people, had been “banned” from engaging in politics. It was quite fortuitous then that Haththa happened to be around, as a visiting lecturer in the English Department. He organised a street theatre workshop, which most of us joined not really realising at the point that it had great potential as a medium for political commentary. We ought to have known, however, because by the time Haththa would have logged almost twenty years of uninterrupted experimentation with the genre with great success.

The workshop snowballed into a production, “Sarasavi Kurutu Gee” (Campus Graffiti) which we played at the Sarachchandra Open Air Theatre, better known as the “wala”. If anything captured all the elements, the subtle nuances, the tragedies, the humour and hopes of what being a “student” at that time involved, it was this very deliberately rough collage of incidents, songs, skits put together by a group of around 30 students.

Haththa crafted this production with a series of exercises, seemingly unrelated but all touching on issues pertaining to the university student in a time of political turmoil. We all chipped in with ideas. We took popular songs and parodied them to suit the general temper of the “play”. We made fun of our teachers, the university administration, the government and of course ourselves.

Perhaps what was most educational in the entire process was that we realised that everyone could be an actor. Well, to be more honest, that we all act, all wear masks and therefore “acting” is not something that has to be learnt, but a human trait that is in all of us waiting to be recognised and exploited. Hopefully for beneficial purposes. I am sure that if not for Haththa, Chandraratne Bandara, Priyantha Wickramasinghe and Upul Kaluhetti, among others, would never have dreamed that they had the potential to become excellent actors. We wouldn’t have known either.

Haththa, to my knowledge, had a problem getting a master’s degree. His argument was that there was no one competent to supervise his thesis. That may have been true, but I believe the real reason was that he found it boring to write about what he did - theatre. Being a non-conformist in many ways, Haththa might have found the task of satisfying some departmental requirement too much to take. He had to pay for this intransigence, of course. For too long, he has had to depend on the good heart of department heads for visiting lecturer appointments.

He is a character. A legend, in fact. He had a carefully developed reputation as a man who paid scant attention to physical hygiene, although I am sure he would deny this. During those turbulent years, Haththa often stayed at Marcus Fernando Hall, as the guest of the then Subwarden, Navaratne Bandara. Navaratne once told me, “can’t you tell your sir to at least wash his clothes?” He was smiling when he said this. I am sure it was said in jest. But Haththa’s “haduness” was legendary. I distinctly remember him making quite a cogent argument for non-bathing. He said, “It’s not good to take a bath on the morning of the play, because it could have an impact on your voice. Actually a bath on the previous night might not be a good idea either. Come to think of it, bathing definitely involves the risk of ruining your voice, and the smallest impact might ruin the production.” His guffaws as he meditated thus, were reminiscent of his laugh when he adroitly brushed aside my complaint about the non-returning of borrowed books. In the year 1990, he had to cancel a performance of the Sinhala version of Hamlet at the Sri Jayewardenepura University because he lost his voice. Maybe he had taken a shower, I don’t know.

And yet, unlike most “legends”, Haththa remains one of the most easy going, easily accessed personalities around. I remember him as a man so generous with his time and his knowledge, that he would forget that although theatre was life to him, it was not exactly seen in those dimensions by all his students. His rehearsals would take up entire days. They were at times preceded by a couple of hours by Haththa’s yarns and he had hundreds to relate. Some he would repeat, forgetting that we had heard it all before.

All part of the personality, I believe. Easily forgiven, for he was not only respected but loved too. “Haththa pehedilivama kollek” (Haththa is most definitely a boy). He was and still is I believe, ageless. A wise old man, a teacher, a young man at times as fervent about “revolution” as an undergraduate, and a baby too.

I remember him as an adoring father. His two children, Rajiv and Chamindu, who were fully fledged members of the drama group at Peradeniya even though they were in their early teens, were loved by all of us. Haththa loved singing the immortal theme song, if one may call it, of Sinhabahu. He would launch into “gal lena bindala” at the slightest provocation. I have seen many versions of Sinhabahu over the years, but have never encountered such a powerful and passionate rendering of this song. It has to do with his children and particular circumstances which I do not intend to go into here.

Haththa knows, I am sure. So do we all.

I do know that there are people who see Haththa as just a “street theatre” person. He is much more than that. His knowledge of theatre goes beyond being familiar with one of its many forms. He is an expert on world theatre and someone who can creative fuse the many forms and themes that he encounters. There are others who would be more competent to write about these things. For me, Haththa is an effervescent character, a one of a kind, full of idiosyncrasies, full of vigour, full of hope for the future. I was never fully convinced of the logic of political positions he advocated. I do know however that he has not willingly harmed or wished harm on anyone.

“One day I fell asleep in a Horana bound bus. I got up somewhere close to Horana yelling, ‘budu thaaththe maava beraganna’ (Father, save me). The bus was almost empty and most of the people knew me. If I had been a ten year old, it wouldn’t have been strange. But here I was, a fifty plus man, yelling out to my father!” We all burst into laughter when he related this story.

A man who can laugh at himself is half way towards enlightenment, I believe.

I shall not comment on the other half. I don’t need to, for we live in a world where 99% of those who profess a love for humanity are just play-acting. In Haththa’s case, theatre is a heart that he embraces and acting is the way he pumps this heart so that its message of love and love for the collective effort is sent along all the arteries that feed hope in hungry people.

We need more of his tribe both on the street and out of it, if only because of all the histories, violence, oppression and resistance that are embedded and in fact make up what is so casually and un-politically referred to as “the street”. This street, we must not forget, is not found only in the teeming metropolis. It is in every village, every factory, every school, police station, army camp and even the jail. He has my salute, this man who has never been dazzled by the glitter of the lush avenues. He has my salute, for what it is worth.

Synopsis :
“The nightmares and realities of a depressed person who is in exile”

“Shadows of Silence” is about the life in exile of a family man with three small children and wife. The film is a deeply felt look at the personal torment of an exile and the permanent presence of pain and alienation in the depths of his heart. It shows how his bleak dreams and illusions echo instead the profound isolation of a shattered mind, driving him to contemplate ending his life.
